BYU vs. Santa Clara, Soccer, etc.

The girls, Sarah, and I attended the BYU vs. Santa Clara Women's Soccer game a few weeks back. Unfortunately with Tracey's surgery she couldn't go with us--we missed having her there. :( We still had fun and kept Tracey in our thoughts. We ate on campus and the girls got Santa Clara hoodies (hey, they don't sell BYU gear there--haha!) The game ended up in a draw 0-0. It would have been fun if there had been some scoring, but oh well. Brandi Chastain is an assistant coach and the girls got to meet her after the game and get a picture with her thanks to Aunt Sarah. Here are some pics from the game.

Eureka Strikers Folsom Cup Classic Champions!!

Lily's team participated in the Folsom Classic Cup Tournament this last weekend and won the championship for their age group! Lily has typically played defense but in this tournament her coach played her in the mid-field and Lily did not disappoint. She scored three goals in the three games leading up to the finals. In the final we played a tough Folsom team and it was tied 1-1 at half time. With about 10 minutes left one of Lily's players was making a run up the left side. Lily shot up the right flank and the cross came just as she reached the goal and she got her leg onto it and nailed it in! It was an incredible goal and wound up being the winning goal. The crowd and players went crazy!

Claire ran track this year for her school. It was a blast to watch her run and it was fun to go the meets as a family. Her coach was Mr. Tindall, which was cool since we went to school with his boys. Needless to say, he was happy to have a Norris on his track team!
Here are the races Claire ran and her personal best times:

100m -- 13.10 (2nd all-time school record for both 7th and 8th grade)
200m -- 28.41 (6th all-time school record for both 7th and 8th grade)
4x100m Relay -- 53.61 (3rd all-time school record for both 7th and 8th grade)

In Finals she ran against the best of 16 schools. Here are her placings:

BYU vs. Santa Clara (Women's College Soccer)

A few weeks back, I was looking at the BYU Women's College Soccer team schedule and noticed that they were going to play Santa Clara, in Santa Clara. So on a whim I decided to get tickets and take the girls to the game. The Giants had a playoff game that night and bay area traffic is generally bad, so we left around midday. We had some time before the game so we toured the Intel museum, which was really cool and free! (I forgot to bring the camera in to the museum). We grabbed a bite to eat before the game and headed over to Buck Shaw stadium for the game. We were some of the first people there, which was cool. We watched the teams warm up and met the BYU goalies' dad. BYU had a good supporting crowd and the girls had fun cheering the team on. The game was close, but BYU wound up losing 2-1. It was so much fun and I'm glad the girls were able to see the game in person.

Soccer/Football/Futbol 2010

Get your boots on and hit the pitch, we've got some matches to play! That's how they would say it in Europe anyway. I picked that up from watching the World Cup. I know the season is just starting but Sophie's team accompanied the Granite Bay High School boys team recently in a friendly game against Whitney High (Rocklin) and it was worth a post. I also posted a team pic from Claire's recent tournament in Pleasanton, where they took 2nd place overall. Claire scored a goal in a 2-1 victory and scored one of two goals in a 2-0 win that put us into the finals. I'll have some pictures of Lily soon.

Yes, all three Norris girls are back in school. It's a bittersweet time as summer draws to an end and the new school year begins. Claire entered the realm of Jr. High and seems to be adjusting well. Lilian is at a new school as well and likes her teacher and Sophie has moved up the seniority ladder at her school as a 1st grader. Here are a few pictures that Tracey took:

Dillon Beach 2010

We spent several days at Dillon Beach recently which is about 60 miles north of San Francisco. It was a really great trip. Pat and Sherry were out from Utah, so it was nice to spend some time with them. We spent most of our time at the beach and then playing games in the evening. Thanks to Mark and Kay for renting the awesome beach houses. The weather was great and I hope we can make it out again next year! We didn't take a ton of pictures but here a few.

Camp Liahona 2010

This year Tracey, Claire, and I all went to Girls Camp. The camp theme was Courage and Strength. It was Claire's first year. It was a great experience and I'm glad Tracey and Claire got to go together. I was only able to stay the first two days. (Thanks Mark and Kay for having Lily, Sophie, and Brody!) I learned a few things about girls camp: The first thing is that they sing, A LOT! Secondly they eat well. Thirdly they know how to invite the Spirit. Oh yeah, sprinkle a little drama in here and there. The girls slept in Yurts (see below), which are small cabin like structures and the priesthood slept in tents around the perimeter of camp. As I call it, we were bear bait since bears had been sighted in camp a couple of weeks earlier. It is a beautiful spot up in the Sierras just off highway 89. Here are some pictures--enjoy:

Santa Cruz 2010

We made our annual trip to Santa Cruz this year and had a blast. Claire's team made it to the semi-finals and we played a tough Fresno team and lost by one goal! It was like a rugby match! Claire scored a goal in the semi-finals and another in a previous game.
The weather was nice and you can't go wrong just hanging out at the beach. We were lucky to only have to stay in the Torchlight Inn the first night. By lucky, I mean you pay $200+ a night for any hotel within two miles of the boardwalk and the hotels are dives for the most part. The next two nights we stayed in a house in Capitola owned by a family in our ward. Not only did we save some money but Capitola is much more serene than Santa Cruz. The house was great and it was nice to spend some quality time there after the tournament. Here are a few pictures from the trip.

I wasn't prepared for Claire to turn 12. It really made me feel like she is growing up and I'm getting older. Somehow we were talked into a sleepover party. So we had ten 12 year-old girls here. For some reason the Cyndi Lauper song "Girls Just Want To Have Fun" kept running through my mind. I thought--now I get it!! Claire also graduated Primary and earned her Faith in God award.

Lilian turned 9 this year and I like the fact that we get to share our birthday's in April. She really wanted a cruiser this year and she has definitely outgrown her previous bike. She loves her new bike. She is such a sweet girl. We love our Lily!!

Lilian was honored yesterday at the Placer County Library for a story she wrote in her third grade class. What an honor it was! They have the stories on display at the library and Lilian's was one of the stories chosen to be read. They brought in a story teller to read the stories. All of the writers were there with their families. They had some local companies sponsor the event. It was a lot of fun. Way to go Lilian! Here is her story:

Tracey Jean Norris makes the best brownie sundae for dessert, but she didn't start out as a great cook. Tracey was born on February 18, 1970, in Stockton, California. She had one sister named Diana and one brother named Steven. Tracey's mom is named Kay. She is a homemaker. Her dad is named Mark and he used to work for the I.R.S. Tracey's hobbies when she was a little girl were soccer, gymnastics and collecting stickers. She grew up in Rocklin. Tracey went to Parker Whitney Elementary School and Roseville High School. Later she went to Sacramento State University for college to become a nurse. She chose that job so she could stay home with her family. My family is lucky because Tracey is my mom and she is a good cook.

For Spring Break we went camping in Big Basin which is just north of Santa Cruz. It is nestled inland from the coast and filled with giant redwoods. It was clear on the drive there but as soon as we got there it started raining--hard. By the time we had camp set up we were soaking wet. We were all sitting in out tent wondering what we were going to do. Tracey said, "I remember seeing a Round Table back in town." Within minutes we were all in the car headed for the shelter and warmth of Round Table. It was hilarious. Anyway, it was nice to get away and spend some time together as a family in the great outdoors.

An Amazingly Wicked Day

Yesterday was an amazing day. Tracey and I saw Wicked in San Francisco at the Orpheum Theatre. Before we drove to the city we filled up on sushi at MIZU for lunch. MIZU is a sushi buffet that we discovered recently. (Mikuni is still our favorite). When we arrived in the city we drove to the coast and hiked around the old Saruto bath houses and the Cliff House. The weather was perfect. The trail wraps around the back side of the golden gate bridge so the views are amazing.

After hiking a bit we headed back downtown in search of a suitable restaurant for dinner. Unfortunately the ones I researched were out of walking distance and the starting time was approaching so we settled for a Mexican restaurant in the food court at the mall on Market St. Super-romantic eh? The Orpheum Theatre is a stunning venue. It is well maintained and you never tire of looking at the intricate detail throughout the interior. Claire asked me what my favorite part of the show was and mine was the "Defying Gravity" performance. The show was amazing and it was so much fun to experience it with Tracey.

CYSA Association Cup Champions!

Last weekend Claire's team won the CYSA Association Cup for the Northern California. The Cup started with 41 teams from all over Northern California. The girls won the first two games and got into the sweet 16, which was held in Morgan Hill. From here on out it's win or go home. We won two close games in the sweet 16. For both games the scores were 1-0 and the last game it was pouring rain. Then it was off to the semi-finals in Danville. Claire woke Saturday morning at 5:00 a.m. throwing up and sick as can be. Turns out I was sick as well. Like an over-zealous dad, I convince her to suit up and we start driving to Danville in the hopes we will feel better. We made it about 30 minutes down the road and we were both so miserable, I called the coach and we turned around. Thankfully Claire recovered and we were all able to make it to the finals. Her team won Saturday's game off penalty kicks. The championship game was the same. 0-0 through regulation and two overtimes, then on to penalty kicks which is the best out of 5 PKs from each team. We made 3 PKs to their 1. It was incredible championship game. Claire played incredibly through the series and scored and couple of goals. It was as an amazing finish and they took the top prize in Northern California! I don't have any pictures of the finals yet, but here are few of Claire with her medal and championship shirt:

We have a new member of the family--Brody. We surprised the girls Christmas morning. It wasn't easy keeping it a secret, but we pulled it off. It was a blast seeing the girls' when he came running out. They have been wanting a dog ever since Jake passed away. As you can see he is a golden retriever and everyone melts when they see him. I forgot how much fun it is training a puppy (ha ha!). Tracey and I are up again late at night, letting him out, etc. The girls are in heaven and Brody is not lacking for being held and cuddled.

Kick or Treat Champions

This past weekend Claire's team won the championship in the Kick or Treat Soccer Tournament in Fremont!

They played three games up until the championship game. They won all three and went on to win the championship game. Claire scored a goal in the second and third game. The third game was their toughest overall and could easily have been considered the championship game. It was 0-0 through the first half and most of the second. The girls were fighting hard on each side. With about 10 minutes left, Claire stole the ball and got a breakaway on the right side about mid field. She drove up the right side and took a shot straight into the back of the net over the goalie. The crowd erupted. It was an incredible moment and clearly was the highlight of the tournament. After the game her entire team surrounded her and hugged her.

This was after the third game. Claire carried the team flag across the field. They won the championship game 2-0.

Tracey - Nike Women's Marathon 2009

Tracey ran the Nike Women's Marathon this past weekend in San Francisco. We headed down early Saturday and first went to Union Square to pick up Tracey's running packet with her number, running chip, etc. It was buzzing with activity. They set up a huge area that covered all of open area in Union Square. It was there that they had the wall with all of the names of the runners. You will see Tracey pointing to her name in the pictures above. We were going to drive the course, since Tracey had never run it, but decided instead to check into our hotel first. We stayed at the Marriott: Residence Inn in South San Francisco, just up from Candlestick Park. It was a great room, very spacious and comfortable. It was only 15 minutes from downtown, so it was a perfect location. On the morning of the race we parked at AT&T park (Go Giants!) and they shuttled us to Union Square where 20,000 runners and their families were gathered. It was crazy! We waited for the 7:00 a.m. start and then Tracey was off. I hopped on a shuttle bus to mile 11 of the race. They had a stop at mile 4, but the line was so long for the shuttle that Tracey was already past mile 4 by the time I boarded. I was able to see her just past 11, which was awesome. She looked great. She said her knee was bothering her a bit, but I knew this would not deter her in anyway! I then walked to the finish, no not 15.2 more miles! The runners continue on from that point and turn back to the finish, which was close to mile 11. The finish was right on the coast along the old great highway, just down from the Cliff House. What an amazing place to run. I was able to see Tracey run the final stretch to the finish. She was jamming! There were tons of people there. I found a ledge that allowed me to look over most of the people right at the edge of the course. The official results aren't in but she finished right around 4hrs22min. This is an amazing time, when you consider the hills they ran! We drove the course after the race and I was amazed at the difficulty of this marathon. I guess that's why they say it's not a race to choose if you're trying to qualify for Boston, etc. So Tracey ran almost the same as her best time in the CIM, which is a much "easier" course compared to this one. Tracey received her necklace from Tiffany & Co. They had S.F. Firefighters in tuxedos handing them out to the finishers. I'm still in awe every time I see Tracey complete a marathon. It is such an incredible feat of endurance physically, mentally, and emotionally. The Marriott was kind enough to give us a late check out so Tracey could shower, etc. which was really nice. Then we drove to the Wharf and ate some delicious crab sandwiches. The weather was beautiful -- Clear skies and the temperature was right around 60 degrees. We left the Wharf and drove the course, stopping at the Presidio and the Golden Gate Bridge. I never get tired of seeing that bridge. We then drove out along the Old Great Highway toward Daly City and then headed back home. It was a wonderful trip and I'm grateful that I was able to share it with Tracey.

Soccer 2009

Soccer season officially started two weeks ago, so I thought I would post the girls' pictures. Claire's official pictures haven't come in yet, but I took some during one of their tournament games. They are all having fun and we are having fun watching them play. Lilian scored her first goal of the season on Saturday! It's fun to see the different levels of the game from Sophie's young team to Claire's Select team with Lilian right in the middle.

Feather Falls Hike

Tracey, Claire, Lilian and I hiked to Feather Falls up in Oroville on Saturday. The weather was great and it was a nice hike. Tracey's brother, Steven invited us to go with their family and some of their friends. The hike round trip is nine miles. The elevation is 2500 ft. and the falls are 410 ft. high.

This is past due, but Claire won the egg drop at her school this year. She had to build a container to hold a raw egg and then test it out. They do the drop the first day and then determine the finalists. She made it through the first day and wound up taking the grand prize. On the finals day, they drop the egg from a fire engine ladder. The key = floral foam. She was pretty excited. Her teacher was really excited as she had never had anyone from her class win. Grand prize was $20.

There aren't many places like the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. If my memory serves me, Dad and Mom went there on their honeymoon. We were within walking distance, which was great and added some mileage to our weekly log. It was a blast watching Claire and Lilian play. Playing in the sand is a completely different game. They both played incredibly. Lilian joined up with the Strikers. One of Claire's teammates sister plays on the team. They made it to the championship game and finished second overall in their division!! Claire's team finished 4th overall in their division and Claire scored the only goal in a 3-1 loss in the semi-finals. They played some tough teams. Sophie did not have any trouble finding ways to have fun. Look for her on the Tilt-a-whirl ride in the pictures. She isn't hard to miss since she is half the size of the rest of the people. It was a great weekend. Tracey and I have the sunburns to prove it!

Yay! Sophie graduated from preschool. I can't believe my youngest will be in Kindergarten in a matter of months. Tracey and I are very sad, but Sophie is definitely excited.

Last night we had a large lightning and thunder storm. We haven't had one like that in years. I learned that my girls were frightened most by the thunder shaking the ground/house. Claire said she plugged her ears because she still wanted to see the lightning out her window. So we watched Marley and Me and the dog was scared by lightning storms, so thus the title of this blog.
